Add restrictions to discount usage
Learn how to apply discount usage limits using the Eats365 POS or Merchant Portal.
Discount restrictions are settings you can configure to limit a discount’s usage. When you create a discount, the eligibility conditions that you set on the discount are followed by default. By adding restrictions, you can set rules to discounts to control how they are being used.
In this article, you’ll learn about the types of discount restrictions and how you can use them, how to enable the discount restriction feature, and how to apply restrictions to discounts.
Types of discount restriction
Restrict Use per Discount
The setting Restrict Use per Discount allows the POS to limit the number of times a discount can be applied to an order.
For example, a restaurant has a “Buy 2 pizzas, Get $10 off per transaction” promotion. On the discount, you can set a limit of “1” use per order using the Restrict Use per Discount function so that staff can only manually process the discount once. This helps prevent the same discount from being applied twice if a customer orders 4 pizzas in the same transaction.
If the POS detects that the same discount is being used more than what is allowed, it will prompt an error message.
Restricted Use in Conjunction
Restricted Use in Conjunction allows you to define a set of rules that determine if a discount can be used together with other discount offers. In a Restricted Use in Conjunction rule, you can group two or more discounts together so that when the discounts are being used on the same order, the system will first check the rules you’ve created to know if the discounts you’re attempting to add can be used together in this instance. The Restricted Use in Conjunction settings you configure apply to POS and online orders.
Additionally, every discount that you add to a Restricted Use in Conjunction rule requires a quantity to be set. By default, the quantity is set to “1”. The quantity serves as the discount’s condition when being used in conjunction with the other discounts included in the rule. If the allowed quantity of the discount you’ve added hasn’t been reached, the system will still allow you to add other discounts unless the last discount you add reaches its allowed quantity and triggers the restriction.
To understand how the Restricted Use in Conjunction function works when being applied to orders, refer to the examples below:
Example 1
Included discounts in rule | Quantity |
Public Discount | 1 |
Category Discount | 1 |
In this example:
- If you apply one instance “Public Discount” to an order, then adding an additional “Category Discount” will trigger the restriction because the set quantity for “Public Discount” is “1” and therefore the allowed quantity has been reached.
- If you apply one instance of “Category Discount” to an order, then adding an additional “Public Discount” will trigger the restriction because the set quantity for “Category Discount” is “1” and therefore the allowed quantity has been reached.
Example 2
Included discounts in rule | Quantity |
Public Discount | 2 |
Drinks Promo | 1 |
Category Discount | 1 |
In this example:
- If you apply two instances of “Public Discount” to an order, then adding an additional “Drinks Promo” or “Category Discount” will trigger the restriction because the set quantity for “Public Discount” is “2” and therefore the allowed quantity has been reached.
- If you apply one instance of “Public Discount” to an order, then adding one additional “Drinks Promo” or “Category Discount” will be allowed.
- If you apply one instance of “Drinks Promo” or “Category Discount” to an order, then adding one instance of “Public Discount” will be allowed because the set quantity for “Public Discount” hasn’t been reached.
Example 3
Included discounts in rule | Quantity |
Public Discount | 2 |
Drinks Promo | 2 |
Category Discount | 1 |
In this example:
- If you apply two instances of “Public Discount” to an order, then adding one instance of “Category Discount” will trigger the restriction. However, adding one instance of “Drinks Promo” will be allowed because the set quantity for “Drinks Promo” hasn’t been reached.
- If you apply one instance of “Public Discount” to an order, then adding one or two instances of “Drinks Promo” or one instance of “Category Discount” will be allowed.
- If you apply two instances of “Drinks Promo” to an order, then adding one instance of “Category Discount” will trigger the restriction. However, adding one instance of “Public Discount” will be allowed because the set quantity for “Public Discount” hasn’t been reached.
- If you apply one instance of “Drinks Promo” to an order, then adding one or two instances of “Public Discount” or one instance of “Category Discount” will be allowed.
- If you apply one instance of “Category Discount” to an order, then adding one instance of “Public Discount” and “Drinks Promo” each will be allowed because their set quantity hasn’t been reached.
If the system detects that the discount you’re adding can’t be used together with the other discounts that you’ve already applied to the order, the system will not allow the action.
